Drake Maye Addresses Kayshon Boutte Trade Rumors Amid Patriots Camp Battle

Kayshon Boutte keeps doing the one thing that makes his situation complicated: he keeps making plays. The Patriots wide receiver has been one of the standout stories of training camp, and his play is putting New England in a tough spot heading toward final roster cuts.

Boutte was widely expected to be squeezed out by New England’s retooled receiver room this offseason. Instead, his camp performance may force the Patriots to either find him a roster spot or work out a trade with a team that has one.

Quarterback Drake Maye was asked about Boutte’s mindset as trade speculation continues to follow him into camp. According to the Boston Herald, Maye praised how Boutte has handled the noise.

“I think just the way Kayshon approaches it. He’s here. He’s here now,” Maye said, per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald. “He’s where his feet are at. I’m having fun throwing to him out there in practice. He’s doing a great job, and he makes plays when the football is in the air. That speaks for itself.”

Maye added a line that read as a nod to the rumors swirling around his receiver without directly confirming anything: “He’s here now. … Probably the last one is Boutte. … There’s a lot of talk about whatever you want to say with Boutte, but he just continues to make plays.”

That’s about as far as Maye is willing to go on the topic — he’s not confirming a trade is coming, and he’s not saying one isn’t. He’s simply pointing to what Boutte is doing on the field right now.

Why the Roster Crunch Exists

The math behind the speculation is straightforward. New England released veteran Stefon Diggs after last season, then rebuilt the room from scratch. The team signed Romeo Doubs in free agency and then landed a bigger name: A.J. Brown, acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Add Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, DeMario Douglas and Efton Chism III to that mix, and New England’s receiver depth chart is suddenly one of the most crowded in the league.

Boston.com reported that Boutte, now entering a contract year, has heard all the trade chatter but is staying focused on the day-to-day grind rather than the rumors. He’s given similar answers to other outlets covering camp, repeatedly pointing back to his own preparation rather than engaging with the speculation.

Head coach Mike Vrabel has also praised Boutte publicly while acknowledging, in general terms, that the team is always open to improving the roster through trades — standard front-office language that hasn’t been tied to any specific Boutte deal.

The Case For Keeping Him

Boutte isn’t just hanging on. He’s been the most consistent target through the first stretch of camp, according to Yahoo Sports, which described him as coming off five straight strong days of practice. He’s improved every season since New England drafted him in the sixth round back in 2023, and he’s built real chemistry with Maye — most notably a highlight-reel touchdown grab in last season’s divisional playoff win over the Texans.

Player 2025 Stats Contract Status 2026 Depth Chart Slot
Kayshon Boutte 33 catches, 551 yards, 6 TD Final year, rookie deal WR3 (behind Brown, Doubs)
A.J. Brown Traded in from Philadelphia Under contract WR1
Romeo Doubs Signed in free agency New deal WR2

Those numbers explain both sides of the argument. Boutte’s production dipped last year on a per-target basis compared to his 2024 breakout, but his chemistry with Maye on contested, downfield throws hasn’t gone anywhere — which is exactly the kind of skill set that’s hard to replace on a practice field, let alone find on the trade market in late August.

What Happens Next

Nothing here is confirmed. No trade has been reported as agreed upon, and Maye’s comments stopped well short of announcing one. What’s clear is that Boutte’s camp performance has complicated a decision that looked closer to settled a few months ago, when Brown and Doubs first arrived.

New England opens the regular season on September 9, which puts final roster cuts on the calendar in the coming weeks. If Boutte’s camp form holds, the Patriots will have to decide whether to keep three legitimate starting-caliber receivers or use one as trade capital before the season begins.
