Xavier Legette Injury Update: Panthers WR Cleared, Canales Says “He’s Back”

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette is trending in the right direction after a scary fall at training camp earlier this week, and head coach Dave Canales delivered an encouraging update following Thursday’s preseason opener.

Legette went down hard during an Aug. 4 practice session after going up for a high-point catch in the end zone. He secured the ball but landed awkwardly on his back and head, and trainers carted him off the field as teammates gathered around him. According to the Panthers’ official team site, Canales said medical staff cleared Legette of a concussion on the spot but diagnosed the issue as a stinger, a nerve injury that causes temporary burning, numbness or weakness after impact to the neck or shoulder area.

“Made a really nice play, high-pointed it … came down really hard,” Canales said, according to WBTV, which cited The Athletic’s Joe Person as the first to report the play. “Went in and evaluated him, cleared him of a concussion but it looks like a stinger, so we’re going to evaluate him more over the next day or so.”

The wait for clarity didn’t last long. Following Carolina’s 33-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night in Canton, Ohio, Canales gave reporters a clean bill of health on his young receiver.

“He feels great,” Canales said of Legette’s status, according to a post on X from reporter Mike Kaye. “He’s back.”

Legette sat out the exhibition matchup, but that was expected regardless of the injury. Canales had already confirmed before the game that Legette wouldn’t play in Canton since Carolina planned to rest most of its starters, using the extra week as a built-in buffer to make sure he was fully cleared.

Why This Matters for Legette’s 2026 Season

The timing makes this injury scare more significant than it might otherwise be. Carolina selected Legette out of South Carolina with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and his first two seasons were a mixed bag. He’s compiled 84 receptions for 860 yards and seven touchdowns across 31 games, but he lost his grip on a starting job to Jalen Coker last year and now heads into a pivotal third season needing to prove he belongs in the lineup.

A clean recovery matters even more with the receiver room already thin. Rookie Chris Brazzell II is set to miss significant time after a knee injury that required season-ending surgery, opening a real opportunity behind Tetairoa McMillan for reps and targets in Carolina’s offense. If Legette had landed on injured reserve or missed extended time, that opportunity would’ve shifted elsewhere fast.

Instead, all signs point to him getting back on the practice field soon. Carolina’s next preseason test comes Aug. 15 in Buffalo, followed by road and home games against Jacksonville and Houston before the regular-season opener at home against Chicago on Sept. 13.

Legette’s Career Numbers So Far

Season Games Receptions Yards Touchdowns
2024 (Rookie)
2024–2025 Combined 31 84 860 7

Those numbers reflect a player still searching for a defined role rather than a true breakout. Canales has publicly praised Legette’s work ethic through the ups and downs, describing him as someone who takes coaching well and stays humble even while grinding to fix his weaknesses. That mentality now gets tested against a compressed camp timeline, with Week 1 just over a month away.

For now, the injury news is as good as it could’ve been. A player who was carted off the field just days ago is walking away from it with nothing more than a short evaluation window — and a real chance to claim a bigger role the moment he’s back on the field.
