Bills’ New ‘Nickel City’ Uniforms Are Getting Compared to a Can of Diet Pepsi

Buffalo unveiled its new alternate uniform on July 27, and Bills Mafia has spent the weeks since arguing about whether “Nickel City” is a tribute to the franchise’s blue-collar roots or a jersey that belongs on a grocery store shelf. The all-gray look, paired with a new blue “Charge” helmet, is now barreling toward its regular-season debut, and it’s still splitting the fan base down the middle.

The Bills built the concept around Buffalo’s history and the buffalo nickel, a coin that hasn’t circulated in the U.S. since the 1930s. According to ESPN, the uniform pairs an all-gray jersey-and-pants combination with “The Charge” helmet, a blue shell carrying the team’s red charging-buffalo graphic. The team described the design as an homage to “the strength, grit and authenticity of Western New York’s hard-working people,” per the Bills’ own release.

It’s the second straight offseason Buffalo has rolled out a new alternate look, following last year’s white “Cold Front” uniform. This time, though, the reaction hasn’t been nearly as warm.

Fans Pile On With Jokes — and a Few Real Complaints

The team teased the uniform with a 90-second hype video built around construction workers who helped build the Bills’ new Highmark Stadium, tying the “blue collar” theme directly to the jersey’s blue collar detail and the words “Go Bills” stitched inside it. Then the internet got its first full look, and the jokes started almost immediately.

One fan joked that anyone caught wearing the uniform in public should have their season tickets pulled, while another wrote it was “a franchise low for uniforms” given the other directions the team could have gone, according to reactions collected by The Big Lead. Other fans defended the gray base as a bold swing for a franchise that’s worn essentially the same primary look for over a decade.

The uniform also picked up national pushback from media voices. On their show, NBC’s Mike Florio and Chris Simms panned the design, with Florio pointing out that the buffalo nickel’s namesake buffalo doesn’t actually appear anywhere on the new helmet, and comparing the overall look to Boise State and SMU’s uniforms, according to Yahoo Sports. A separate Yahoo piece described the online response as “mostly negative,” with critics likening the gray tone to something pulled off a discount department store rack.

Why the Diet Pepsi Comparisons Took Off

The specific jab that’s stuck the hardest: the jersey looks like a can of soda. The gray base, paired with the uniform’s blue and red accent colors, lines up almost too neatly with Diet Pepsi’s silver-and-blue can design, and fans on social media wasted no time pointing that out once game-action photos started circulating from Buffalo’s Blue and Red scrimmage. It’s the kind of comparison that sticks precisely because it’s so easy to see once someone says it out loud.

That’s a real risk with alternate uniforms built around an unconventional base color. Gray is a color the Bills had never used in a uniform before this year, and stepping outside a 50-year color identity — even for one game — invites this kind of instant, meme-ready reaction, fair or not.

When Buffalo Will Actually Wear It

Despite the noise, the Nickel City uniform will only see the field twice in 2026, and both dates are locked in. The Bills confirmed the schedule in a release covered by local outlet WROC and independently corroborated by ColorWay Sports.

The Week 15 game against the Bears at Highmark Stadium is a standalone Saturday night window, giving the uniform a national audience for its second appearance. Whatever the verdict on the design, it’s a two-game commitment, not a full rebrand.
