Matthew Stafford Hit With $534K California Tax Lien Despite $55M Extension

Matthew Stafford just signed a one-year, $55 million contract extension that pushed his career earnings past $500 million. He’s also carrying a $534K tax debt that hasn’t gone away.

Stafford and his wife, Kelly, were hit with a state tax lien from the California Franchise Tax Board for the 2024 tax year, according to Page Six. The total comes to $534,453.67.

A tax lien like this attaches to property and property rights the couple currently owns or acquires down the line. Per Page Six’s reporting, interest and fees keep piling on for as long as the debt sits unpaid.

The lien is a legal filing, not a criminal matter, and there’s no indication from the reporting of intent or dispute — just an outstanding balance the state has flagged. Stafford’s camp hasn’t issued a public statement on it.

The Numbers Behind Stafford’s $500M Career

Context matters here. Stafford enters his 18th NFL season in 2026 off the best year of his career. He led the league in both passing yards (4,707) and touchdowns (46), while throwing just eight interceptions. That performance earned him his first career NFL MVP award.

Category 2025 Season
Passing Yards 4,707 (NFL leader)
Passing Touchdowns 46 (NFL leader)
Interceptions 8
Team Record 12-5, 2nd in NFC West

The Rams rode that season to two playoff wins before falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. Seattle went on to win the Super Bowl. The 2026 season opens with a new wrinkle: the Rams face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL’s first-ever regular season game played in Australia.

Stafford’s Real Estate Portfolio

Off the field, the Staffords have been active in Southern California real estate. They bought a $28.15 million mansion in Hidden Hills, a purchase that followed an earlier $10.5 million buy of the property next door.

They’ve also been selling. Page Six reports the couple offloaded three other Hidden Hills homes for a combined $21.3 million in June 2026 — a sign they’ve been consolidating rather than simply expanding their holdings.

Matthew and Kelly Stafford’s relationship dates back to their time at the University of Georgia. They married in 2015 and have four daughters together.
