Barkley’s Pitch Pays Off
LeBron James picked Philadelphia on Friday, and the city’s football team wants in on the celebration. James agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to NBA.com, ending a free-agency chase that also involved the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Eagles running back Saquon Barkley didn’t wait long to respond. “Welcome to the city! Let me know when you tryna tee it up,” Barkley wrote on X, tagging James directly, according to NFL.com.
The invite wasn’t out of nowhere. Two weeks earlier, Barkley had made his case for James to Philadelphia reporters. “I think it is one of the greatest sports towns in the world,” Barkley said at the time, according to Heavy.com. “If you want to go out with a bang, I feel like a great spot would be in Philly, and bringing a championship to Philadelphia, you’d be remembered forever.”
James apparently listened. Eagles tackle Lane Johnson also celebrated the move on social media, referencing the 76ers’ longtime “Trust the Process” rallying cry, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Why the City Sees a Championship Window
The pitch resonates because Philadelphia has already proven it can deliver. Barkley ran for 2,005 yards in his first season with the Eagles and helped the franchise win Super Bowl LIX. The 76ers haven’t won an NBA title since 1983, and James — a four-time champion with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers — is entering the deal as the most decorated player in the league’s history, per NBC News.
James explained his decision in his own words on X. “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family,” he wrote, according to CBS News Philadelphia. “What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind.”
He’ll walk into a reshaped roster. The Sixers added Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics earlier this summer, pairing him with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. That trade is a big reason James’s camp reportedly shifted its focus toward Philadelphia in the final stretch of free agency, according to Bleacher Report.

What’s Next
Barkley’s golf invitation is casual, but it fits a pattern. Philadelphia’s biggest athletes — Barkley included — spent much of the summer publicly recruiting James, and the 76ers now enter training camp as an Eastern Conference contender built partly on outside star power showing up to say welcome. Whether James actually tees off with Barkley remains to be seen. Neither side has confirmed a date.
