Ja’Kobi Lane’s One-Handed Grab Has Ravens Coach Jesse Minter Taking Notice

Baltimore’s new coaching staff is getting an early look at what could be a difference-maker. New Ravens head coach Jesse Minter, hired this offseason after Baltimore moved on from John Harbaugh, is searching for playmakers across a roster that’s still finding its shape under a first-year staff. Third-round rookie Ja’Kobi Lane looks like he’s already found his way onto that list.

The wide receiver has been the story of camp through the first several practices. ESPN’s Jamison Hensley has tracked Lane’s rise since padded work began, and Tuesday added another highlight to the reel: a falling, one-handed grab along the sideline that had teammates buzzing.

“That was a great play by Ja’Kobi,” Minter told reporters after practice. “He’s continued to flash and make those type of plays. As anybody, you’re always searching for consistency down after down. Again, the more he shows Lamar that he’s making those types of plays, the more trust they build, and that’s really what training camp and what practice is all about.”

Jamison Hensley of ESPN posted video of the catch on X, calling it the highlight of a strong camp for the rookie. Hensley posted on X: “Here is the amazing catch from Ja’Kobi Lane today. The rookie third-round pick has been the star of Ravens training camp so far.” —

Why Lane’s Emergence Matters for Baltimore’s Offense

Lane’s flashes are coming at a notable moment. The Ravens are working through their first camp under Minter after moving on from Harbaugh, and star receiver Zay Flowers sat out Tuesday’s practice while finalizing a four-year, $140 million extension, one that includes $108 million guaranteed. That absence opened up more first-team reps for the rest of the receiver room — and Lane made the most of his.

Baltimore returns Flowers and Rashod Bateman at receiver, plus Mark Andrews at tight end, but the passing game has been a target for improvement under the new staff. A big-bodied target who wins above the rim gives Lamar Jackson a different kind of weapon than what’s currently in the room, and that’s exactly the trait the Ravens prioritized when they took the 6-foot-4 Lane in the third round.

Explaining why the catch mattered beyond the highlight, the sequence came on third down and helped push a first-team drive that ended in a Derrick Henry rushing touchdown, according to the Ravens’ own team website. That’s the kind of situational, trust-building play Minter referenced — third-down conversions in camp are how young receivers climb a depth chart that still lists Flowers as the clear WR1.

Lane’s College Production

Over three seasons at USC, Lane made 99 catches for 1,363 yards and 18 touchdowns, per USC Athletics. He earned Third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2025 after catching 49 passes for 745 yards and four touchdowns, and he was the Las Vegas Bowl MVP as a sophomore following a seven-catch, 127-yard, three-touchdown performance against Texas A&M.

Season Receptions Yards TDs
2023 7 93 2
2024 43 525 12
2025 49 745 4

What Comes Next

Baltimore drafted Lane knowing what it was getting: a red-zone weapon with a wide catch radius but a lean frame that will be tested at the NFL level. Camp reps against corners like Marlon Humphrey are one thing. Sundays are another. Still, if the early returns hold and Lane keeps making plays like Tuesday’s grab, the Ravens’ receiver room — and Jackson’s trust in it — starts to look a lot deeper than it did in the spring.
