Jessie Bates has been a fixture in the Atlanta Falcons secondary since 2023, but his status at training camp — and his long-term future with the team — is suddenly in question. The three-time All-Pro safety has missed practice time this week, and a fresh ESPN trade proposal has Falcons fans wondering whether a Jessie Bates trade could actually happen before the season starts.
Why Bates Has Been Away From Falcons Camp
According to ClutchPoints, Josh Kendall of The Athletic reported that Bates had been out for two straight days at Falcons training camp in Flowery Branch, Georgia, with no clear explanation for the absence. It’s not yet known whether an injury or a contract dispute is behind it.
That report lines up with what The Falcoholic observed on the ground at Tuesday’s Day 6 practice: Bates had his helmet off on the sideline during 11-on-11 drills, though the outlet noted it’s possible this was simply a scheduled rest day. Nothing official from the Falcons has confirmed either explanation. Until the team or Bates himself addresses it directly, this stays in the “reported but unconfirmed” bucket.
The timing matters. Bates is entering the final year of the four-year, $64 million deal he signed with Atlanta in 2023, and he told reporters this offseason that he wants to retire a Falcon. But he also acknowledged the business reality of the league. “Things can change. People get traded or get cut,” Bates said in April. “That’s the mindset you’ve got to have when you’re talking about a year-by-year approach.” No extension talks have been reported since.
The ESPN Trade Proposal: Bates to San Francisco
Enter ESPN’s Seth Walder, who used a recent training camp trade series to lay out a hypothetical send Bates to the San Francisco 49ers. His logic starts with Atlanta’s outlook. The Falcons aren’t viewed as contenders this season, and Walder argued that changes the calculus on a pending free agent.
“If the Falcons were expected to contend, it would make sense to keep Bates and see the original contract through. But they aren’t, and with a ton of 2027 cap space even after the Bijan Robinson extension, the Falcons will likely be spenders next offseason,” Walder wrote.
Walder’s argument centers on compensation. If Bates plays out the season and leaves in free agency, Atlanta risks getting nothing back — no draft pick, no return. Trading him now, even for a modest package, guarantees the Falcons get something. It’s a common team-building calculation late in a rebuild-adjacent year: get value for an asset before it walks for free.
There’s also a scheme fit. Raheem Morris, who coached Bates in Atlanta the past two seasons, is now San Francisco’s defensive coordinator. Walder pointed to that connection as a reason the pairing makes sense on paper, adding that the 49ers ranked 25th in EPA allowed per dropback last season and could use an upgrade next to Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha.
If Atlanta did move Bates, it wouldn’t be left bare at the position. Second-year safety Xavier Watts has emerged as a legitimate starter, and the Falcons have already been described as building out their defense around him and the rest of the secondary.
What This Means Going Forward

This is one analyst’s trade proposal, paired with an unconfirmed camp absence that could just as easily be a rest day as anything more significant.
