Derrick Henry Clarifies Retirement Comments After Kay Adams Interview Sparks Confusion
Derrick Henry wants to finish his career in Baltimore. He does not want anyone thinking that career is ending soon.
The distinction mattered enough that the Ravens running back spent part of Wednesday cleaning up a story that got away from him. During a training camp sit-down with Kay Adams on “Up & Adams,” Henry told her, “When I’m done playing, I want to be done playing here. When I hang it up, Baltimore will be the last place that I want to be,” according to Newsweek.
Adams then posted the clip herself, framing it as Henry saying he wants to retire as a Raven — a characterization that, according to Yardbarker, wasn’t quite what Henry actually said. He talked about where he wants to finish, not about walking away.
Fans read it the second way anyway, and Henry noticed. He posted on X to draw the line himself: “I would like to finish my playing career with Ravens. I never said anything about retiring lol, I’m enjoying being a Raven. I’ll worry about that retirement sh— later,” he wrote, per Yahoo Sports. He deleted the post shortly after, but the message had already landed.
Henry Has Said This Before — And Backed It Up on the Field
This isn’t a new position for Henry. He told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini something similar back in February 2025 on the NFL Honors red carpet, saying flatly, “I want to retire a Raven,” according to SI.com. What changed this week was the reaction, not the sentiment.
And retirement doesn’t look close from a performance standpoint. Henry is coming off a 1,595-yard, 16-touchdown season in his 10th year, his best rushing total since the historic 2,000-yard campaign in 2020, per Yahoo Sports. He turns 33 during the 2026 season and enters it as one of the league’s most productive backs at his position.
Henry had already been asked directly about hanging it up earlier in camp, and gave reporters a pretty clear answer then too. “I don’t try to enter another season thinking about retiring and have that on my mind. That’s not even my mindset,” he said, according to Newsweek.
| Season Stat (2025) | Total |
|---|---|
| Rushing Yards | 1,595 |
| Rushing Touchdowns | 16 |
| Consecutive Seasons w/ 10+ Rush TDs | 8 |
| Career-Best Rushing Season | 2,000 yards (2020) |
Titans Fans Weigh In
Henry spent his first eight NFL seasons in Tennessee, made five Pro Bowls there, and posted the franchise’s signature 2,000-yard year. So when Adams’ post framed the comments as Henry choosing Baltimore over Tennessee, it stirred up his old fan base. Reaction on X ranged from disappointment to the more measured point that Henry currently plays for the Ravens, so of course that’s the team he’s talking about.
Nothing here rules out a ceremonial one-day contract with the Titans down the line — plenty of players who spent their best years with one franchise have retired that way with another. But Henry’s actual message this week wasn’t about severing ties with Tennessee. It was about correcting the idea that he’s thinking about retirement at all right now.
