Chiefs Rookie WR Cyrus Allen Returns to Practice After Shin Injury
Kansas City Chiefs training camp has a working Cyrus Allen injury update, and it’s the kind of news the team wanted. The fifth-round rookie wide receiver, who had emerged as one of camp’s early standouts, was back on the field this week after missing nearly a week with a bruised shin.
Allen went down during a special teams drill on Aug. 1 in St. Joseph, Missouri, colliding with cornerback Kaiir Elam. He stayed on the ground before trainers helped him off, and reports at the time noted he couldn’t put full weight on the leg, according to NBC Sports.
The scare came at a bad time for a player who was making the most of his opportunity. Allen led all Chiefs receivers with five catches the day he got hurt, according to FanSided. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters Allen and receiver Xavier Worthy, who hurt his shoulder the same day, would each need “a day or two” before returning, per Athlon Sports.
That timeline held up. Allen suited up in full pads on Friday, catching passes from Patrick Mahomes during drills, according to NBC Sports. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the return on X: “Chiefs WR Cyrus Allen, who stood out during training camp before he bruised his shin Saturday, has returned to practice.” —

For Allen, sharing a practice field with Mahomes still hasn’t fully sunk in. He’s a Chiefs fan who grew up gaming as the team.
“It’s still a surreal moment for me because I used to play the [Madden NFL] game with Pat a lot,” Allen said, according to KCTV5. “I’m pretty familiar with what he [does]. That was my favorite team.”
Allen also acknowledged the jump from college football isn’t a small one. “This ain’t college, this is big boy ball,” he said. “So everything’s pretty much timing — I’m on his time now,” per the same KCTV5 report.
Why Allen’s Return Matters for Kansas City’s Receiver Room
Camp injuries always carry roster stakes, and a longer absence for Allen could have opened the door for another receiver to seize his reps. Instead, he’s back with two weeks still to go before the Chiefs’ first preseason game — enough time to keep building on the buzz he generated in the offseason program and the opening days of camp.
Coaches have already taken notice. Reid called Allen’s start “a nice job,” according to Nate Taylor of ESPN, cited by NBC Sports. Sports Illustrated’s Chiefs coverage went further, reporting that NFL Media’s Albert Breer sees comparisons between Allen’s physical profile and playing style and four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs, per Heavy.com. That’s a lofty comparison for a fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati, and it’s still speculation rather than a settled outcome — but it explains why Kansas City wanted him healthy in a hurry.
Allen’s return also lines up with a bigger camp storyline: Mahomes working his way back from the torn ACL and LCL he suffered in his left knee in December 2025. Mahomes has been fully cleared for training camp participation since Aug. 1 and has drawn praise from Reid for his conditioning, according to NFL.com. The two connecting in drills this week is an early, informal marker that both Kansas City’s franchise quarterback and one of its most talked-about camp additions are trending the right direction heading into the preseason.
Kansas City opens its 2026 season at home against Denver on Sept. 14. Whether Allen’s camp performance translates into real playing time will start to come into focus once preseason games begin.
