Deion Jones is coming home. The New Orleans Saints are signing the veteran linebacker to a one-year contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday, giving the 31-year-old a chance to suit up for the team he grew up rooting for.
Jones was born and raised in New Orleans. He played high school football at Jesuit before staying home for college at LSU. Schefter framed the move as more than a routine roster addition.

That’s not an exaggeration. Jones has now spent time with all three of the Saints’ current NFC South rivals — the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers — along with a one-season detour to the Cleveland Browns in 2022. New Orleans is the only division team he hadn’t worn a jersey for, and it happens to be the one with his name on the birth certificate.
A Career That Started in Atlanta
Jones broke into the league as a second-round pick out of LSU in 2016, taken 52nd overall by Atlanta. He didn’t take long to make an impact. He started as a rookie on a Falcons team that reached Super Bowl LI, and by 2017 he’d made the Pro Bowl behind a career-high tackle season. Atlanta rewarded him with a four-year, $57 million extension that made him one of the highest-paid inside linebackers in football at the time.
The Falcons tenure lasted through 2021. From there, Jones bounced through Cleveland, Carolina, and Tampa Bay, chasing snaps and a role while never straying far from his home division. Across 128 career games, he’s totaled 761 tackles, 12 sacks and 13 interceptions, including five defensive touchdowns, per Pro Football Reference.
His production has cooled significantly since those Atlanta years. He managed just 24 tackles in 17 appearances for Tampa Bay last season, a fraction of the triple-digit totals that once defined his game.
What Role Will He Play in New Orleans?
The Saints haven’t released an official 2026 depth chart, so it’s premature to pencil Jones into a specific role. New Orleans has been thin at linebacker this offseason after Demario Davis’s departure left a void that names like Chris Elliss, Pete Werner and Nick Stutsman have been competing to fill.
Jones gives defensive coordinator Brandon Staley another veteran body to evaluate as that group takes shape. Given his recent tackle numbers, he’s more realistically viewed as experienced depth and training-camp competition than an outright starter. Staley, who took over New Orleans’s defense in 2025 after previous stops as a head coach and coordinator with the Chargers, 49ers and Rams, has generally preferred faster, coverage-capable linebackers — a scheme fit that could still work in Jones’s favor even at this stage of his career.

Coming Full Circle
For a player who’s logged stops in Atlanta, Cleveland, Carolina and Tampa, the personal significance of this signing is hard to overstate. Jones grew up idolizing a Saints team that never had him on its roster, and now, in what could be one of the final chapters of his career, he’ll get to play meaningful snaps in the city where it all started for him.
The Saints don’t need Jones to be the Pro Bowl player he was in his mid-20s. If he can offer steady depth, locker-room experience and a body that can handle spot duty across 17 games, the one-year commitment carries little downside — and for Jones, it’s the ending to a division-spanning career that no script could have written better.
