Kevin O’Connell wasn’t just running a practice Sunday night. He was building a moment.
The Minnesota Vikings held their annual night practice at TCO Stadium, throwing open the doors to fans as the team wraps up its second week of training camp. Full pads. Full stadium. According to Yahoo Sports, fans packed in around the Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center to watch a Vikings team trying to shake off a 9-8 finish that kept them out of the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.
O’Connell made sure the crowd knew it mattered. Speaking after practice, he singled out the energy in the building as something the players actually feel, not just background noise.
“You guys have brought so much energy. These guys (players) feel you. You got to understand, they feel you when you’re here. They feel that we’ve got the best fans in the National Football League. It’s not close,” O’Connell said, per Yahoo Sports.

Camp Grind Meets a Real QB Battle
The gratitude tour wasn’t just ceremonial. O’Connell framed it as a signal that camp is shifting gears — from teaching install to actual preparation for an opponent. “We’ve thrown a lot at these guys in the first two weeks of camp. It kind of culminates with us now changing our mindset to go think about playing somebody else. These guys are about ready for it. I can tell,” he said.
That shift matters because Minnesota still hasn’t settled its most important roster question. Before Sunday’s practice, O’Connell told reporters the quarterback competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray remains genuinely open. Per Yahoo Sports/FOX 9, the two have split roughly 300 snaps almost evenly across the first nine practices of camp, and neither has separated himself. Murray reportedly had the stronger showing on the first day fans were allowed to watch, but both have had good stretches and rough ones since.
“Nothing has really changed from a standpoint of the timeline. We’ll see how the reps continue to go, and when we feel like we’re at that place, we’re going to make sure we communicate that internally and then to you guys,” O’Connell said, according to the same report.
That’s the real story sitting underneath Sunday’s feel-good moment. A coach thanking his fans is a nice beat. A dead-even quarterback race with the preseason opener five days away is the thing that actually decides how the season starts.

The Vikings open their preseason schedule Saturday, Aug. 15, on the road against the New York Giants — the first live look at how the McCarthy-Murray competition is trending outside of padded practices. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw and defensive lineman Caleb Banks were held out of Sunday’s practice on planned rest days, per Yahoo Sports/FOX 9, a normal camp management move at this stage rather than anything injury-related.
O’Connell, the NFL’s 2024 Coach of the Year, has been consistent in saying he won’t rush the quarterback decision. With Minnesota opening the regular season at home against Green Bay, the pressure to get it right — and to do it in front of what O’Connell called the best fans in the league — is very much part of the calculation.
