Eric Bieniemy Returns to Chiefs Training Camp After Two Weeks Away Following Wife’s Shooting

Eric Bieniemy was back on the practice field at Missouri Western State on Monday, and for a building that had been running without its offensive coordinator for two weeks, that alone counted as a good morning.

“It’s good to have EB back,” Andy Reid told reporters, per Nate Taylor of ESPN

“Back in the fold. … I talked to him several times a day. … The primary is that Mia is stable.”

Bieniemy left camp on July 27, the day after his wife, Mia, was shot at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia. The couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. He remains held without bond, and his court appearances have been delayed pending a mental health evaluation, per NFL.com.

Mia Bieniemy was hospitalized in the immediate aftermath and later moved out of intensive care. Reid has provided periodic updates on her condition since, and Monday’s message was the most direct one yet: stable, and doing well.

Bieniemy Stayed Connected Even While Away

What’s notable is how plugged in Bieniemy reportedly stayed during his 11 practices away from the team. Pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier ran the offensive coordinator duties in his absence, but Bieniemy watched practice live streams and kept in contact with the staff. General manager Brett Veach described one moment where Bieniemy called during a session, asked to speak to Reid, and relayed a specific coaching point for rookie running back Emmett Johnson. “That’s the thing that is so refreshing to have back, to have that attention to detail,” Veach said.

That’s not a small detail for a Chiefs team trying to rebuild an offense that stumbled through a season that ended without a playoff appearance for the first time in the Mahomes era. Bieniemy’s command of detail was exactly what made him a two-time Super Bowl-winning coordinator during his first stint in Kansas City from 2018 to 2022, and it’s part of why Reid brought him back rather than leaning solely on the staff that carried the offense during his absence.

Timing Matters for a Team Trying to Reset

Bieniemy’s return lands at a genuinely important stretch of camp. Kansas City is trying to answer real questions about its offensive identity after last year’s collapse, and Patrick Mahomes is working back from a torn ACL suffered late in the season, with the expectation he’ll be ready for Week 1. Getting Bieniemy’s voice back in these install periods, rather than after the preseason winds down, gives the staff more runway to sort out exactly what this offense looks like before games start to count.

Players and staff greeted Bieniemy warmly Monday, including a hug with longtime Chiefs radio voice Mitch Holthus, a small moment that said more about how the building feels toward him than any quote could. Kansas City opens the regular season September 14 at home against Denver.
