Christian McCaffrey Misses 49ers Practice With Tightness, Echoing 2024 Injury Scare
Injury concerns are creeping back into the conversation around Christian McCaffrey as the San Francisco 49ers push through training camp ahead of the 2026 season. The star running back sat out practice on Monday with what the team is calling general tightness, and the timing has fans on edge.
McCaffrey is entering his 10th NFL season and his fifth with San Francisco. At his best, he’s one of the most complete backs in football, a load in the run game and just as dangerous catching passes out of the backfield. But durability has been the recurring issue of his 49ers tenure, and 2024 was the low point. He played just four games that year after a calf issue turned into bilateral Achilles tendinitis, sidelining him into November before a season-ending PCL injury ended things early.
That history is exactly why Monday’s absence set off alarms. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak downplayed it, though, framing the missed practice as workload management rather than anything serious.
“Christian always kind of has his rep count in any camp,” Kubiak said, per the Press Democrat. “You guys are aware of the adjustments we’ve made to our schedule to kind of keep them from having too many off days… in terms of his rep load, we’re right on track where we want to be.”
Not everyone is convinced it’s nothing. Yahoo Fantasy posted a side-by-side comparison on X that’s been making the rounds among 49ers fans: “Christian McCaffrey in 2024: Placed on IR with ‘calf tightness’ in Week 1, didn’t return until Week 10. Christian McCaffrey in 2026: Missed practice due to ‘tightness,'” the post read —

The parallel is blunt, and it’s not hard to see why it’s resonating. The word “tightness” carries baggage for McCaffrey specifically, given how that 2024 diagnosis eventually snowballed into a half-season absence.
Why San Francisco Can’t Afford to Lose Him
McCaffrey answered every doubt with his 2025 season. He carried the ball 311 times for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns, and caught 102 passes for another 924 yards and seven scores through the air. That’s a workhorse doing damage in both phases of the offense, exactly the kind of production San Francisco needs if it wants to get back to the postseason and further.
| Category | 2025 Total |
|---|---|
| Rush Attempts | 311 |
| Rushing Yards | 1,202 |
| Rushing TDs | 10 |
| Receptions | 102 |
| Receiving Yards | 924 |
| Receiving TDs | 7 |
San Francisco went 12-5 in 2025 and made it back to the playoffs, only to run into the buzzsaw that was the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round. Seattle blew the Niners out 41-6 on the way to winning Super Bowl LX. San Francisco is hoping to close that gap in 2026, and reclaiming the NFC West from a Seahawks team that just won it all won’t happen without McCaffrey at full strength.
What’s Next
The 49ers open their season in unusual fashion this year, traveling to Melbourne, Australia, to face the division-rival Los Angeles Rams. Kickoff is set for Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the NFL’s first regular-season game on Australian soil. It’s a long trip and a long season, and San Francisco needs its best players ready for both.
For now, there’s no indication McCaffrey’s situation is anything beyond standard camp maintenance. But given his track record, every missed rep is going to get watched closely until he’s back on the field.
