Aaron Rodgers Jumps Into Steelers’ Defense at Training Camp, Opens Up on Rediscovering His Love for Football

Aaron Rodgers is 42 years old, playing what he’s already said will be his final NFL season, and he’s still finding new ways to have fun at Steelers training camp. On Saturday, the veteran quarterback lined up on the other side of the ball entirely, joining Pittsburgh’s defense to rush the backup offense during a blitz drill at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.

Rodgers wasn’t behind center for this one. He was in the backfield chasing it. Footage of the moment quickly made the rounds on social media, with fans reacting to the future Hall of Famer testing out pass-rush reps more than two decades into his career.

The clip circulated widely enough that it was picked up by multiple outlets, including a Yardbarker repost of a Bleacher Report video showing Rodgers lined up against the offensive line, getting off the ball and rushing toward the quarterback spot he’s occupied for 22 pro seasons.

Rodgers Credits Tomlin for Reigniting His Love of the Game

The lighter moment came during the same week Rodgers opened up about a much heavier subject: why he almost walked away from football for good. In a Saturday interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s “Movin’ the Chains” with Pat Kirwan and Jacob Hester, Rodgers traced his journey from a rocky stint with the New York Jets, through Achilles surgery and a long rehab, to finding his footing again in Pittsburgh under then-head coach Mike Tomlin last season.

“I’m thankful for last year with Coach Tomlin, because he helped me get that love back, that deep love back for the game,” Rodgers said, according to NBC Sports. “That, you know, tearing my Achilles and going through a year of rehab, and just never feeling like myself, it just kind of beats you up a little bit, and I didn’t want that to be my ending in the game that I love so much, and Mike and being around the guys, got me that love back, and I was content in walking away.”

Rodgers tore his Achilles in 2023 during his first game with the Jets, a injury that wiped out nearly the entire season and forced a grueling rehab. By the time he arrived in Pittsburgh, he’s said he was mentally prepared to retire if the game no longer felt right. Instead, according to Fox Sports, it was Tomlin and the Steelers locker room that changed his mind heading into 2026.

Reunited With McCarthy in Pittsburgh

Tomlin stepped away from the Steelers this offseason, and rather than that closing the door on Rodgers’ career, Pittsburgh’s decision to hire Mike McCarthy kept it open. McCarthy coached Rodgers for over a decade in Green Bay, including their Super Bowl XLV win together, and Rodgers described the reunion as a “full circle” moment.

“They hired Mike McCarthy, and I was like, ‘OK, maybe we need a full circle here, me and Mike need a full circle here,'” Rodgers said, per Fox Sports.

The timing sets up an early storyline for Pittsburgh’s preseason. The Steelers host McCarthy and Rodgers’ former team, the Green Bay Packers, in their preseason opener on Thursday, August 13 at Acrisure Stadium.

Camp Buzz Around a Motivated Rodgers

Beyond the defensive cameo, reports out of Latrobe describe a Rodgers who’s been unusually generous with his football knowledge this camp, at times explaining route concepts and coverage reads to Pittsburgh’s own defensive backs between reps. Steelers Now reported that after a one-on-one drill, several defensive backs huddled around Rodgers to pick his brain on quarterback tendencies.

Steelers Depot’s day-by-day camp diary also noted Rodgers turning in one of his sharper practices of camp on day nine, even after throwing a pick-six earlier in the session — the kind of up-and-down rep sheet typical of August practices where backups mix in and defenses get aggressive.

Pittsburgh’s division picture hasn’t gotten any easier heading into 2026. Baltimore revamped its coaching staff this offseason, and Cincinnati has invested heavily in its defense. But if the training camp buzz is any indication, Rodgers is entering his likely final season locked in — and, apparently, willing to line up wherever the coaches ask.
