Jameis Winston Compares Giants’ Loaded Offensive Staff to Gumbo

It ain’t an offseason without Jameis Winston delivering an all-time quote.

It happened Wednesday after the New York Giants practiced at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giants had opened the first few weeks of training camp at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia before shifting operations back to their home facility.

Winston, barefoot, faced the media and broke down the Giants’ new-look coaching staff under first-year head coach John Harbaugh. When a reporter asked about the offensive installs, Winston reached for a very specific analogy — captured on video by the New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy.

Ryan Dunleavy posted on X: “Jameis Winston said the offensive system install is ‘gumbo’ (A Thomas McGaughey favorite term)”

“It’s so exciting because we have so many different minds, right? We have five coordinators on offense, and I think that is a great example of the leadership that Coach Harbaugh has,” Winston said, according to a transcript published by the Giants’ official site. “He’s let his coaches build a system that is very unique to all of them. All of them are doing different things.”

Then came the line that will live on Giants Twitter for a while.

“Just listening to Drew Brees’ Hall of Fame speech, I can compare it to gumbo. There are so many good mixes in there. You got the old school. You got the new school. You got this melting pot of greatness. So it’s really fun.”

He must have been hungry after practice.

Why the Comparison Actually Fits

Winston isn’t exaggerating about the coaching depth. Harbaugh built an offensive staff loaded with former play-callers and head coaches: Matt Nagy runs the offense as coordinator, Brian Callahan — fired as Tennessee’s head coach last year — handles the passing game and works directly with quarterbacks, and Greg Roman, a four-time NFL offensive coordinator who worked under Harbaugh in Baltimore, serves as senior offensive assistant. Mike Bloomgren and Willie Taggart, both former college head coaches, round out a room that has more college and NFL head-coaching experience than most position groups in the league.

That’s the “gumbo” — different coaching philosophies, different eras of football, all stirred into one offense. It’s also, by Winston’s own account, a running joke inside the building: he credited the phrase to Giants special teams coordinator Chris Horton’s staff-favorite term for describing the mixed system.

Perhaps it’s worth noting that Winston, 32, spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, so he knows exactly what a gumbo is.

Winston’s Role Heading Into 2026

Winston, now in his second season with the Giants, is set to back up 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart. He signed a two-year, $8 million deal with New York in March 2025, a contract that initially looked like an afterthought after the club also added Russell Wilson and drafted Dart — but Winston ended up seeing the field anyway.

In three appearances last season, Winston completed 37 of 66 passes for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, according to RotoWire. He made two starts in place of an injured Dart, going 0-2, including an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions in which he threw for two touchdowns and added a 33-yard receiving score on a trick play.

Category 2025 Stat
Completions/Attempts 37/66
Passing Yards 567
Touchdowns 2
Interceptions 2
Starts (Record) 2 (0-2)

He’s seen limited opportunity in recent years, but Winston has carved out a role as a locker-room presence — someone teammates and coaches point to for energy and leadership, gumbo metaphors included.
