Nick Bosa Breaks Four-Year X Silence to React to Ryan Clark’s ESPN Firing

Nick Bosa doesn’t tweet. That’s been the case since November 12, 2022, when the San Francisco 49ers edge rusher last posted anything of his own on X. He griped that day about the NFL’s stance on turf: “Nfl says they care about player safety yet they can’t put us on a natural surface.” Then he went quiet for nearly four years.

That streak ended Thursday night. Bosa returned to the platform to react to Ryan Clark’s firing from ESPN, and he didn’t need many words to make his feelings known.

Bosa Reacts to Clark’s ESPN Exit With a Single Emoji

Bosa quoted a post from The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand announcing Clark’s departure and responded with only an “OK hand” emoji —

No caption. No explanation. Just a gesture widely read online as approval. It was enough to pull the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year out of a social media hibernation that had outlasted two 49ers playoff runs and a $170 million contract extension.

Clark’s exit from ESPN became public in dramatic fashion. According to Yahoo Sports, Clark learned he’d been let go in the middle of a Monday broadcast of “NFL Live” and did not return for the rest of the show. ESPN had reportedly planned to notify him privately on Tuesday morning, but moved up the timeline after media inquiries suggested the news might leak before the network could tell him directly.

Clark later disputed the idea that he chose to step away voluntarily. Responding to a TMZ post claiming he “wasn’t forced” off set, Clark wrote, according to Yahoo Sports, that he’d asked producers if he should be done for the day and was told simply, “Yes.”

Why Bosa and Clark Have History

Bosa’s reaction traces back to November 2024. That’s when he was fined $11,255 by the NFL for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat during a postgame interview with quarterback Brock Purdy, a violation of the league’s uniform and equipment policy barring political messaging on game days.

Clark, appearing on “The Pivot Podcast,” criticized Bosa at the time for the hat, framing it as a divisive act in a sport meant to bring people together. Bosa never publicly responded — until Thursday’s emoji did the talking for him.

The two are hardly the only figures caught up in the fallout. Clark’s firing was part of a broader wave of cuts at ESPN this week that has also swept up longtime baseball voice Karl Ravech, NFL insider Tom Pelissero and analyst Bart Scott, among others, according to Yahoo Sports. The layoffs stem from ESPN’s absorption of NFL Network staff and programming following its acquisition of NFL Network distribution rights, which closed earlier this year.

What’s Next

There’s no indication the two plan to escalate the exchange further. Bosa is currently working his way back for 49ers training camp after a 2025 season limited by injury, while Clark has said he intends to keep building “The Pivot Podcast” as he processes his sudden ESPN exit.

For now, Bosa’s four-year social media silence is officially over — and it took Clark’s firing to break it.
