Tucker Kraft Fires Back at Regression Doubters Ahead of Packers Season
Tucker Kraft isn’t interested in outside noise. The Green Bay Packers tight end, working his way back from a torn ACL, used a sit-down with Kay Adams to put doubters on notice before he’s even played a snap this preseason.
“All I’ve really heard from outside noise is people not expecting me to be who I was prior to my injury. Number one regression candidate at tight end this year. Well, I have something to say about that, and it’ll come from my play when I come back,” Kraft told Adams on the Up & Adams Show.

Kraft tore the ACL in his right knee on Nov. 2, 2025, against the Carolina Panthers, ending a breakout campaign in which he caught 32 passes for 489 yards and six touchdowns through eight games — production that had him in the conversation as one of the league’s best young tight ends. According to ESPN, Kraft was activated off the physically unable to perform list on July 31, less than nine months after surgery, and eased into individual drills without contact work.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed the move before practice that Friday. “It’ll be no team [drills],” LaFleur said, via Packers.com. “We’re gonna get him back ingrained into the process and individual.”
The ramp-up has been methodical by design. Green Bay operates under a standard nine-month recovery expectation for ACL tears, and Kraft’s timeline lines up almost exactly. Full-contact reps and 11-on-11 work are next, with the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 13 as the target.
Where the “Regression Candidate” Line Came From
Kraft’s word choice landed the same week the phrase surfaced elsewhere in the NFC North race. Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson used nearly identical language on Aug. 1 when a reporter asked him about comments from Jaguars coach Liam Coen, who’d said on Jacksonville radio that he sees plenty of national coverage of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and none of his own team.
“Well, we’re the number one regression candidate, so I think that we’ve got plenty of motivation ourselves,” Johnson said, according to NBC Sports. “We talked about Caleb in the past, he’s used to handling a lot of attention. So I’m not worried about that.”
Whether Kraft borrowed that framing is speculation — no outlet has reported him referencing Johnson directly, and Kraft’s comments to Adams focused on his own recovery, not the Bears. The overlap could simply be a coincidence of two players in the same division hearing the same outside chatter. It’s worth noting the two teams don’t need much of a reason to needle each other; Packers-Bears is the NFL’s oldest rivalry, dating back over a century, and any shared talking point between the two sides tends to get noticed by fans on both ends.
What It Means for Green Bay
If Kraft is back to full strength, the Packers’ offense gets meaningfully harder to defend. He’s a mismatch problem for linebackers and safeties alike — a big-bodied receiver who can also block in-line, giving Green Bay flexibility in personnel groupings without tipping run or pass. Losing him for the stretch run last season took away a key release valve for the passing game, particularly on third down.

The Packers have kept their tight end room thin behind him, which only raises the stakes on a clean recovery. Green Bay’s front office, led by GM Brian Gutekunst, has also signaled openness to extension talks as Kraft plays out the final year of his rookie deal — conversations a strong, healthy season would only accelerate. No specific extension framework has been reported, so any numbers remain speculative until the team or Kraft’s camp confirms details.
For now, the noise Kraft referenced is mostly coming from fantasy analysts and outside evaluators wary of betting on a tight end coming off a major knee injury. His response wasn’t a press release. It was a promise to let the tape do the talking once the pads come on.
