Justin Herbert, Madison Beer Training Camp Video Gets Roasted on First Things First
Justin Herbert’s engagement to singer Madison Beer has been one of the feel-good stories of the Los Angeles Chargers’ offseason. Not everyone at First Things First felt the same way about a training camp video of the two showing off some hair-braiding PDA.
During the Wednesday, Aug. 5 edition of the show, hosts Nick Wright and Chris Broussard tore into a clip of Beer playing with Herbert’s hair on the practice field, drawing comparisons to Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

Wright didn’t let up from there. He argued that Herbert, entering his seventh NFL season without a playoff win, has more viral hair-fixing clips with his fiancée than postseason victories with the Chargers, according to Yahoo Sports.
Broussard, who described himself as a Herbert fan, wasn’t much kinder. “This has to be a joke,” he said, before adding, “I get it — you’re in love and all that, but come on!” per the same Yahoo Sports report. Both hosts wondered aloud where Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel were while the moment played out on the practice field.
It wasn’t just FS1 piling on. Fans on X ran with it too. One account, Madison Beer News, posted the original clip that kicked off the discourse, while other users joked about Herbert “getting cooked in the locker room” for the moment, according to a report from SI/OnSI.
Justin Herbert and Madison Beer’s engagement came right before training camp
The timing is what turned a sweet moment into a punchline. Herbert and Beer announced their engagement on July 28, just one day before Herbert reported to Chargers training camp for his seventh NFL season, according to ESPN.
The couple shared the news in a joint Instagram post captioned “Meet my fiancé,” featuring a photo of Herbert on one knee. Beer’s ring, per Forbes, is an elongated cushion-cut diamond that experts estimated is worth between $500,000 and over $1 million.
Herbert and Beer were first linked in August 2025, when the quarterback visited the set of one of Beer’s music video shoots. They didn’t confirm the relationship publicly until October, when Beer kissed Herbert on the Chargers’ sideline during a game against the Washington Commanders, according to NBC New York.
Since then, the two have made regular public appearances together, from Lakers games to Beer’s own “Locket” tour stops in Europe over the offseason. No wedding date has been announced.
Herbert’s focus is back on football
Whatever the internet thinks of the PDA, Herbert has said his attention is squarely on football now that camp is underway. He’s working through his first full training camp under McDaniel, the Chargers’ new offensive coordinator, after Los Angeles reached the playoffs again last season but still hasn’t won a postseason game during his tenure.
Harbaugh, for his part, has been openly supportive of the relationship all offseason — at one point, according to HEAVY, joking that he’d give Herbert a ride to the airport when the quarterback missed voluntary workouts to travel with Beer.
The Chargers open the 2026 preseason in the coming weeks, and Herbert’s on-field performance will do far more to shape the narrative around him than any hair-braiding clip. For now, though, First Things First made sure the moment didn’t pass quietly.
