Carson Beck didn’t blink in his first taste of NFL action. The Arizona Cardinals’ rookie quarterback started Thursday night’s Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers and delivered a poised, mistake-free performance in a 33-30 loss at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
Beck completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, good for a 125.4 passer rating, according to ESPN. He played the entire first half plus the first series of the third quarter before handing the offense to fourth-string quarterback Kedon Slovis, per NBC Sports.
The third-round pick out of Miami — who began his college career at Georgia before transferring — directed scoring drives of 96, 50 and 61 yards. His best throw of the night was a 49-yard strike to wide receiver Jalen Brooks, who beat Panthers cornerback Akayleb Evans deep and hauled it in a step ahead of a defender, ESPN reported. Beck also connected with Simi Fehoko on a 5-yard fade for his lone touchdown.
His final pass of the night nearly went for a big gain, too. A fourth-and-5 throw found rookie receiver Reggie Virgil’s hands before former Cardinal Isaiah Simmons knocked it loose, according to Cardinals.com writer Darren Urban, who estimated the play would have picked up roughly 35 yards.
LaFleur Says Beck’s Poise Is Nothing New
Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur wasn’t surprised by what he saw. He’s been watching it in practice for weeks.
“It’s going to be a broken record, the same thing that I keep seeing at practice where he just gets in and out of the huddle and he doesn’t make it too big; he just lives by the play,” LaFleur said, according to ClutchPoints. “I was proud of the way he played and it’s a good first stepping stone for him.”
LaFleur credited offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and quarterbacks coach Matt Schaub for Beck’s preparation, per ESPN. Beck echoed that even-keeled approach when speaking to reporters after the game, saying the moment didn’t feel bigger than it was — a mindset he’s carried since his big-game days in college, including two trips to the College Football Playoff. According to Bo Brack, Beck added:
“Good, but not surprised.”

Where Beck Fits in Arizona’s QB Picture
None of this changes the pecking order in Arizona’s quarterback room. Jacoby Brissett, signed to a one-year deal, is the presumed Week 1 starter, and veteran Gardner Minshew II sits behind him. Neither Brissett nor Minshew played Thursday, according to Yahoo Sports, which also reported that Beck has no realistic shot at winning the starting job to open the 2026 season.
What Thursday did was reinforce the idea that Beck could push for real playing time down the line if Arizona struggles and LaFleur decides to look toward the future. Beck wasn’t facing a defense with much to prove, either — Carolina had its own backups and roster hopefuls on the field, coordinated by Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Beck wasn’t flawless. He held the ball too long on a third-down snap late in the second quarter and took a sack, Yahoo Sports noted. But for a player making his first professional start, the composure stood out more than the blemish.

The Cardinals were tied 17-17 when Beck exited late in the third quarter, and Carolina eventually pulled out the 33-30 win. Beck’s night ended with the kind of stat line that doesn’t erase a depth chart — but does buy a rookie some goodwill heading into the rest of camp.
