Carson Beck’s Voice Cracks Recalling Return From Injury After Cardinals Preseason Debut
Carson Beck sounded more nervous talking about football than he looked playing it.
The Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback got emotional during his postgame press conference Thursday night, his voice catching more than once as he described what it meant to be back on an NFL field. The Cardinals fell to the Carolina Panthers 33-30 in the Hall of Fame Game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, but the scoreboard barely factored into Beck’s night. He went 15-of-19 for 188 yards and a touchdown before he was pulled in the third quarter for second-year quarterback Kedon Slovis, according to NBC New York.
Beck, a third-round pick out of Miami in the 2026 NFL Draft, made his first career start in the annual preseason kickoff game. “Shoot, from the time you cross the white lines and you’re out there on the first play, I was ready to roll,” Beck said, according to the PHNX Cardinals video. “Since last night, when I was lying in bed, I could barely sleep. I was just thinking about having an opportunity to play football again. Never taking it for granted.”
The gratitude traces back to a lost season. Beck tore the UCL in his throwing elbow on the final play of the first half of Georgia’s SEC Championship Game win over Texas in December 2024, an injury that required surgery and ended his college career at Georgia. He transferred to Miami for a final season, leading the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff national championship game in January before losing to Indiana. Beck has said the injury changed how he views every rep he gets now.
“Ever since I had the injury, the surgery, and had to get my UCL repaired and everything, I’m having gratitude for the game and every opportunity that I get. How Beck Looked in His NFL Debut
On the field, Beck looked like a quarterback who’d been here before, even if he hadn’t. Beck completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, per Yahoo Sports, working mostly with backups and a receiving corps still finding its footing. He also connected on a scoring drive that set up a Corey Kiner rushing touchdown.
Arizona’s official team site described the assignment simply: a clean operation and correct decisions were all first-year head coach Mike LaFleur and the coaching staff wanted from Beck. He delivered that and more, directing an offense that outscored Carolina’s starters-light unit for most of the night before the Panthers won it on the final play.
Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett had set similar expectations before kickoff, saying the measure of a good night for Beck wouldn’t be the final score.
“Great execution. It all starts with that position, being able to call the play, comfortable with the play, make sure everybody’s getting up to the line, great cadences, kind of all those little basic steps there, and then just smart sound decisions,” Hackett told ESPN ahead of the game.
The Panthers, playing mostly backups themselves, won on the final snap. Kenny Pickett started under center for Carolina in place of Bryce Young, per multiple outlets covering the game.
What’s Next for Beck and the Cardinals
Beck’s path to real playing time still runs through a crowded depth chart. Veteran Jacoby Brissett is expected to open the 2026 season as Arizona’s starter, with Gardner Minshew II also on the roster as an experienced arm. Beck’s job through camp and the preseason is to build a case for a bigger role down the line — something LaFleur’s staff will be watching closely over Arizona’s remaining three exhibition games.
The Cardinals return to the field against the Las Vegas Raiders in Las Vegas next Thursday, Aug. 13, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. PT, according to the Raiders’ official site. It’s the second straight year the two teams have met in the preseason; Arizona won last year’s matchup, 20-10.
Whether Beck starts again or shares reps with Minshew remains to be seen. But after Thursday night, one thing was clear: whatever happens with his role this season, Beck isn’t taking a single snap of it for granted.
