Kevin O’Connell Won’t Call the Vikings’ QB Battle ‘Closed’ Between Murray and McCarthy

Kevin O’Connell Addresses Vikings’ Open Quarterback Competition

Training camp is a few weeks away, which means the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy is about to heat back up. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made that clear Thursday during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, where he was asked directly about the “open” nature of the battle.

“I’m not really familiar with a closed competition,” O’Connell said. “I’ve heard that everyone’s fascinated with that aspect of it, but here’s what I would say… Really the goal going into this offseason was to elevate the quarterback position, because when we have a certain standard of play that we feel like we have multiple guys in that room that we feel are capable of reaching that standard, the Minnesota Vikings win football games.”

O’Connell didn’t stop there. He leaned into the idea that internal pressure, not outside noise, is what pushes players forward. “The best way to achieve that is having a daily attempt to have guys push each other and not just always need the outside noise or not always need what the narratives may be,” he said. “Let’s roll the ball out there, and let’s try to help the Minnesota Vikings get better.”

Why the Vikings Moved Fast to Sign Kyler Murray

O’Connell’s answer fits the classic coach-speak playbook: talk up competition, keep the room guessing, protect the locker room. It’s also a necessary approach for a team that won nine games last season despite a rotating door at quarterback. That instability is exactly why Minnesota moved quickly to sign Murray after his release from the Cardinals.

From here, opinions split. O’Connell and his staff will frame Murray’s addition as fuel for competition, and he made that case again on the Dan Patrick interview. But people who track McCarthy’s development closely, and who know what kind of player Murray is, tend to lean toward Murray winning the job. That outcome likely wouldn’t bother O’Connell.

Some in and around the building already believe Murray has the inside track. Even if that’s true, O’Connell isn’t going to say so out loud in early July, with camp and the preseason still ahead. So instead, he gave a full breakdown of the room.

O’Connell Breaks Down the Full Quarterback Room

“Kyler has come in and done a great job,” O’Connell said. “J.J., I think, has benefited from it; he’s had a really good spring. Carson Wentz is this veteran quarterback in the room. As a guy who’s played seven or eight quarterbacks in four years, the two years we had our starter play the whole season, we won 13 and 14 games. So we want to try to get back to the standard of having the quarterback position be a driving force behind us winning by doing their job, by hopefully activating the great players they get to play with.”

He also pointed to the other side of the ball as a reason for optimism. “We’ve got a great defense,” O’Connell said. “Brian Flores has done an unbelievable job. If we can limit giving the football away and generate some explosives and get our run game going — although no one’s really talking about that, that has been a major emphasis of this offseason, both from a coaching staff standpoint and a player development and offensive development standpoint.”

He closed with a nod to the division around him. “I’m excited about where we’re at, but we won’t really know until we go calcifying, forging our team together. We’re gonna compete in the NFC North. It’s a very, very competitive division,” O’Connell said.

What Comes Next for the Vikings’ QB Competition

July brings out every metaphor in football’s playbook for describing the grind ahead — building calluses, forging, calcifying. Whichever term coaches reach for, the process looks the same: assemble the roster, put players to work, and land on a real depth chart by September.

O’Connell will kick off that process in under three weeks when Vikings training camp opens. Until a starter is named, expect this question to follow him to every microphone between now and Week 1.
