Seahawks Rookie Bud Clark Opens Up on Meeting Richard Sherman Ahead of ‘Hard Knocks’ Premiere

Seattle Seahawks rookie safety Bud Clark is getting a moment in the spotlight this week. The NFL’s official account resurfaced a clip of the second-round pick describing his first encounter with franchise legend Richard Sherman, timed to promote the upcoming premiere of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Seattle Seahawks, which drops Tuesday, August 4 on HBO and HBO Max.

The exchange itself dates back to the first day of rookie minicamp on May 1 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, but it’s being pushed back into the conversation now as HBO gears up to document Seattle’s title defense for the first time in franchise history.

Clark Tried Not to “Fanboy” Over a Seahawks Icon

Clark, Seattle’s No. 64 overall pick out of TCU, admitted he had to check himself when Sherman showed up on the practice field. According to The Spokesman-Review, Clark said he walked up, introduced himself, and then had to talk himself out of asking for a photo. “I’m a Seahawk now, I can’t do it,” he told reporters at the time.

Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowler who anchored Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” secondary before retiring, has stayed a regular presence around the Seahawks facility since hanging up his cleats. He wasn’t there in an official capacity on May 1 — just showing up, in a Seahawks cap, to watch and offer pointers to the incoming defensive back class, according to Yahoo Sports.

Third-round cornerback Julian Neal got some in-rep coaching from Sherman that same day, recalling that Sherman corrected his eye placement mid-drill, per the Seahawks’ own team site. Clark, drafted to play a similar ball-hawking style to what made Sherman a star, was clearly aware of the lineage he’s stepping into.

Why the Timing Matters: Hard Knocks Starts Tuesday

None of this would be resurfacing three months later if not for one thing: Seattle is the featured team on this year’s Hard Knocks, and the show’s marketing machine is now in full swing. It’s the first time since the series began in 2001 that it has followed a defending Super Bowl champion, according to Deadline, and the Seahawks are coming off a win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LX this past February.

The five-episode season, narrated by Liev Schreiber, premieres Tuesday, August 4 at 6 p.m. Pacific and will follow head coach Mike Macdonald’s roster through camp battles, injury news and the personal stories the show has built its reputation on. New episodes air weekly through September 1.

Head coach Mike Macdonald has already addressed the crew’s presence directly with his players. “This is a gift from the football gods,” he told the team in a clip released by the NFL, according to Yahoo Sports, before adding that he doesn’t want players changing how they carry themselves just because the cameras are rolling.

Clark’s Path to a Roster Spot

The Sherman moment is a nice storyline, but Clark still has to earn playing time. Seattle lost starting safety Coby Bryant in free agency this offseason, opening a real opportunity at the position. Macdonald recently praised Clark’s improvement at training camp, saying his most recent practice was his best yet. “He’s put a lot of work in,” Macdonald told reporters, per Yahoo Sports.

At TCU, Clark posted an 79.5 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus last season, intercepting four passes and adding four more pass breakups. Whether that translates against NFL-caliber competition is exactly the kind of question Hard Knocks cameras tend to chase.

Player Position Draft Slot (2026) College
Bud Clark Safety No. 64 (Round 2) TCU
Julian Neal Cornerback Round 3

Seattle’s rookie class, along with veterans who reported to camp in late July, will be under the spotlight all month as the team works toward its preseason opener against the Cowboys on August 15 — with a national audience watching some of it play out on HBO.
