Rueben Bain Jr. is starting his NFL career with numbers on two different scoreboards. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie edge rusher has been rated 80 overall in Madden NFL 27, tying him for the fourth-highest rating among all first-year players in this year’s game.
The Buccaneers’ official X account shared the news Tuesday, posting Bain’s digital player card alongside the caption “3 is starting off strong in his @EAMaddenNFL debut.” The graphic lists him at No. 2 among rookie edge rushers and No. 4 among all ranked rookies leaguewide.

EA Sports has been rolling out its rookie ratings ahead of the game’s August 13 release, and Bain’s number places him in a small group. According to FOX Sports, he is one of just four rookies leaguewide to reach an 80 overall rating or better at launch.
Where Bain Ranks Among This Year’s Rookie Class
Cowboys safety Caleb Downs and Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love share the top spot among rookies at 82 overall, with Jets edge rusher David Bailey right behind at 81, according to FOX Sports. Bain slots in next at 80, making him the highest-rated linebacker in the rookie class per one report from Yahoo Sports.

Notably absent from the top of the list is No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, who checked in at just 74 overall despite leading Indiana to an undefeated season and a national title, per ClutchPoints.
The College Résumé Behind the Rating
Bain’s number isn’t coming out of nowhere. The Buccaneers took him 15th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft out of Miami, where he closed his career with a monster 2025 season: 15.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks, numbers that earned him the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
He’s part of a nine-player Miami draft class, the Hurricanes’ largest since 2017, and he’s the highest-rated of that group in the new game, according to CanesInSight.
