Kevin O’Connell isn’t ready to name a starter. But he just gave the clearest public signal yet about how Kyler Murray is trending.
“I think mentally he’s definitely probably ahead of where I thought,” the Vikings head coach said of Murray, per Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. O’Connell was quick to add context: the offense itself has new wrinkles this year, and both Murray and third-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy are still absorbing them together.
A Real Competition, Not a Formality
Minnesota signed Murray to a one-year, veteran-minimum deal in late March after Arizona released him, betting O’Connell’s system could resurrect a career stalled by injuries and inconsistency. On paper, Murray looks like the favorite. He started 87 games for the Cardinals and has a career built on scrambling, improvising, and making defenses pay for over-pursuing. McCarthy, meanwhile, struggled with injuries and inconsistent play as a rookie starter last season.
None of that has stopped O’Connell from running an open competition through training camp, and McCarthy isn’t playing the role of formality. CBS Minnesota reported that McCarthy pointed to his improved footwork, timing and rhythm since his hand injury healed last season as reasons he’s grown “mentally and physically, just dramatically.” He also called the competition “100%” legitimate, according to the outlet.
O’Connell has echoed that framing publicly, telling reporters, per ESPN.com, that Murray has “shown improvement every single day” while cautioning against reading too much into any single practice rep, calling quarterback play “an all-11 thing right now.”
Why the Timeline Matters
The Vikings open their preseason Saturday, August 15, on the road against the New York Giants, the first of three exhibition games before the September 13 regular-season opener at home against Green Bay. Teams typically rest starters in the final preseason game, which means O’Connell’s real evaluation window is compressed into the first two matchups — this weekend against New York and an August 22 home game against Baltimore.
O’Connell has said he has an internal target date for naming a starter but hasn’t revealed it. Given the standard practice of sitting starters in preseason finales, the most likely scenario is a decision landing two to three weeks before the Packers game — enough time for the winner to prep as a starter without a lengthy public runway that invites second-guessing.

There’s a financial subplot worth watching here, separate from who wins the job. Arizona still owes Murray roughly $36.8 million in guaranteed money this season, which is why Minnesota could sign him for the veteran minimum. That structure means Murray has real incentive to perform regardless of what a modest Vikings paycheck says — he’s auditioning for his next real contract in 2027 either way. For McCarthy, the stakes cut differently: a lost competition wouldn’t just cost him snaps, it would cast real doubt on his standing as a former first-round pick a year removed from being handed the starting job outright.
